Home reading started this week. Please check out my earlier blog post from this week about home reading. Books need to be returned on Friday so that the can be quarantined before other children use them.

Here are some highlights of the week.

In language arts we have finished learning the first 26 graphemes.  Next week we will start learning 2 letter graphemes.
Please check Google Classroom for weekly grapheme practice and word work.  Google Classroom

Raz Kids login information cards were sent home today.  This is the same online reading program we used when we went to at home learning last March.  Please help your child login this weekend and have them read at least one book.

In writing this week we began using a  thinking routine called "I see, I Think, I Wonder," to help us include descriptive words in our writing.  Here is the picture we used as our writing prompt and some "I See" writing.

In Math the student have been learning about place value.  This week we focused on open ended problems that required them to how their understanding of place value by using blocks and or drawing a representation of the numbers.  Then they had to explain their thinking.  Here are some student samples of a problem called, "Would You Rather."

In Social Studies, we are learning to state our opinion about a topic in preparing for a debate next week.
Did you know that Calgary had 6 other names before it became Calgary?  The various Indigenous tribes that lived around the area each had their own name for the land around the Elbow River.  The question the students were asked is; "Do you think the name of the land should have been changed to Calgary."  Next week we will discuss the pros and cons of changing the name and have a debate.

In Science we have been continuing our study of Small, Crawling, Flying Creatures.  This week we started talking about what stories do insects have to tell?  We watched the video of "The Diary of a Worm" to help them see how an insect might tell their own story.  Students have chosen different insects and they have made story plans about a story they think their creature might want to tell.

Ask Me About
  • What is my opinion about the name of the land being changed to Calgary.
  • What insect I have chosen to write a story about?
