In writing this week we started discussed the question, "What is a script?"   Students learned that it is writing what people are going to say for a play, an assembly, a TV show or movie.  We began brainstorming ideas for scripts to write about our places we are learning about in Social Studies.  Then we began writing our scripts for our stories that occur in Fort Calgary and on the Bow and Elbow Rivers.  Here are some samples from their scripts so far.

Fort Calgary Past
Kitchi:  I will show you where the buffalo is.  You lived where the Blackfoot used to live. We have to be quiet when we see the bison.
All:  WOW
Officer T:  The bison are so furry.
Officer C: How is there so many bison?

Fort Calgary Present
Jack: Of course Miss Ruby.  Right Violet? Violet?
Violet:  Ahhhhh! Guys help!
Jack:  Where'd she go?
Christopher:  Miss Ruby, do you know where Violet went?

Bow  and Elbow River Past
Patrick: Look I found a map!
Lloyd: Look two rivers on the map.  Bow River and Elbow River. Oh! They meet up.  I didn't know that!
Allen:  Uh Guys? The door is shaking!

Bow and Elbow River Present
Diamond:  Let's camp right by the river.
Lango:  Yes. Then we can swim and fish.
James: We can skip rocks too!  Did you know that the Elbow RIver is connected to the Bow River?

In Social Studies, we have been working on writing our scripts. After our scripts are finished, students are going to create Stop Motion videos to tell their stories and share the information they have learned about Fort Calgary and The Bow and Elbow Rivers.

In Math we continued working a addition and subtraction and practicing showing our work. We also learned about estimating.  Estimating is making a guess or sensible prediction.  We started by looking at a set of objects for a few seconds and then practicing saying "There are about... block."  This is sometimes hard for students because they always want to have the correct answer.  We talked a lot about it's okay not to have the right answer.  Estimating is just being close.  We also talked about using "Friendly Numbers" such as 5 or 10 or numbers that end in a 5 or 0 as benchmarks for estimating.

In Science this week we began learning about building things and completed a building challenge.  They had to build a bridge that spanned between two desks, and hold at least 1 book.  Every group did a great job and built strong bridges using only popsicle sticks and masking tape.  Check out some of the pictures of their work.

  • What is happening in my script about Fort Calgary or The Bow and Elbow River?
  • Practice estimating different sets of objects around the house (lego, books, cheerios)
