Friday Blog

 Reminders:

Return home reading every Friday

Library is on Wednesday.

Dec. 9th:  Backwards Day ~ you can wear some items of clothing backwards as long as it is safe.

Dec. 17th:  Traditional or Formal wear:  You can wear some traditional or formal holiday clothing (from any holiday that you celebrate)

Dec. 18th:  Last day of school before Winter Break

In ELA we read Pete the Cat.  We noticed there were several words that end in "ing". This led to a lesson on verbs, suffixes and syllables.  We found several actions words in the story such as rock, play, eat, and sing.  One student describe these words has having one heart beat per word (the music teacher in me is very proud!) We then practiced adding "ing" to the end of these words and turning them into two syllable words or words that have 2 heart beats.  Next week we are going to be working on some "Random Acts of Kindness," in December to write letters and cards for people that we appreciate in our school and around the world!

We also learned more graphemes this week.  "ar", "ck", "ed" and "or". make sure to ask me what sounds these graphemes make!  If you need a reminder or want to practice, check out the video in our Google Classroom.

Pete the Cat also inspired our art this week.  We did a how to draw Pete the Cat tutorial and the kids were thrilled with their results!

In math this week we explored the difference between 2D and 3D shapes.  2D shapes are flat we describe them by the number of sides and corners.  3D shapes we can pick up and we describe them by the number of edges, faces, and vertices (corners)

We also practiced solving a problem that had us using our knowledge of shapes to answer. Try solving one at home!
Hard:
There are some shapes in the bag. In total, the shapes have 18 faces. What shapes might be in the bag?

Hardest:
There are some shapes in a bag. In total, the shapes have 18 faces. I add a triangular pyramid to the bag. How many shapes are now in the bag? How many faces do they have in total?

In our Inquiry block we have finished up our Stop Motion videos.  Everyone has done a great job matching their script to the story.  We have learned that we need to take a lot a pictures so that we our voice recordings match what is happening in our videos. Our focus for the next week or so is to build our visual timeline and put all these elements together.  We can't wait to show you the finished product!

Ask me About:
  • Where do I hear these different sounds: "ar," "ck," "ed," and "or"  Hint- think of the words car, back, bed, and for.  Can you think of any others?
  • Try to solve one of the Math problems above! Remember it is important to show our work!
  • Take some time to practice logging into Google Classroom, Iris, Raz Kids, and Prodigy.  This should be something we can start doing independently!
